Education isn’t broken.
It’s obsolete.

Independent, responsible learners who own the work. Dennis DiNoia, Mr. D to those who know him, has spent 35 years handing the work back to students and watching them run with it: from a dropout-prevention program to serving over 16,000 homeschooled students worldwide.

Hi, I’m

Dennis DiNoia.

Math chose me.

I never planned to teach math. I was a business major helping my church youth group with algebra when a teenager told me, “you explained this better than my teacher.” The school board looked at my transcript, saw the math credits, and that was that.

My first classroom was a dropout-prevention program: the kids nobody wanted. I handed back graded papers with smiley faces. They went straight under the desk. So I flipped it. Check your own work. Tell me what grade you got. For the first time, they were the ones asking why.

“You’re a teacher. It’s time to teach.”

In 2008 the market crash ended my sales career. I sat in my car and prayed for direction, and the answer came loud and clear.

Education isn’t broken, it’s obsolete. Today Mr. D Math serves more than 16,000 students who own their learning.

The new paradigm

Leading a new paradigm of education.

“Why am I learning this?” “How can I learn this?”

The school model most of us grew up with isn’t failing. It does exactly what it was built to do: a teacher at the front of the room, answers handed down, everyone memorizing for the same test at the same pace. It just wasn’t built for a world where AI can hand anyone an answer in seconds.

Dennis calls what comes next the new paradigm. Walk into that classroom and you won’t see a teacher lecturing. You’ll see thirty students, each working on their own thing at their own pace, with the teacher there to coach, not to tell. The students do the work, check it themselves and own it. They stop asking “Why am I learning this?” and start asking “How can I learn this?”

That’s what Dennis means by independent, responsible learners and thinkers, and it’s the idea behind every keynote he gives.

The Lion in the Room

Test anxiety, and what brain science says about students under pressure

Your audience leaves with

  • What happens in a student’s brain the moment it goes blank
  • Why “calm down” backfires, and the words that work instead
  • Tools parents, teachers, and students can use on the very next test
About this keynote

Every year, students who studied, prepared, and knew the material sit down for a test and go blank. Dennis has watched it for 35 years, and he’ll tell you what it isn’t: laziness, weakness, or a bad attitude. To a brain that senses threat, a test and a lion in the room look about the same. Drawing from his forthcoming book, The Student Becomes the Teacher: Turning Test Anxiety into Confidence, Dennis explains what actually happens when a student freezes, why “just calm down” makes it worse, and what to do instead.

Living the Life of an Entrepreneur

What it takes to build something that matters

Your audience leaves with

  • How mission survives the stretch when nothing is working yet
  • The point where the business had to outgrow Dennis
  • Why community and integrity outlast strategy
About this keynote

What happens when a classroom teacher decides to build something bigger? Dennis takes your audience inside the real story of Mr. D Math: the wins that didn’t feel like wins yet, the decisions that took faith over logic, and the day he realized the business couldn’t keep running through him alone. No highlight reel. Just what it costs, and what it gives back, to build something that lasts.

Goal Setting with the Merlin Principle

Create the future first. Then close the gap.

Your audience leaves with

  • The Merlin frame: set the goal from the future, not from the past
  • Why “realistic” goals quietly shrink people
  • A written goal and the daily practice that keeps it alive
About this keynote

Most people set goals the reasonable way: start where you are, hope for momentum, quietly let it fade. Merlin did it backwards. The legendary wizard already knew the future, so he simply lived into it. Dennis walks your audience through goal setting the Merlin way: decide the future first, treat it as already true, then close the gap with intention and daily decisions. They leave with a goal in hand and a framework for making it real.

Honor Your Word as Yourself

The one value that changes everything

Your audience leaves with

  • The difference between keeping your word and honoring it
  • The clean-house test: finding the promises you’ve let slide, and making them right
  • How self-trust gets rebuilt one promise at a time
About this keynote

Commitments are easy to make and easy to break, and everyone in the room knows it. Dennis makes a distinction most people have never heard: you won’t always keep your word, but you can always honor it. That difference is where self-trust gets built. Drawing on 35 years in education and his own story, this is a talk about integrity with no scolding in it, and a practice your audience starts before they leave.

Probe, Master, Empower

A framework for raising independent learners

Your audience leaves with

  • A concrete move for each stage, not just a mindset shift
  • Why “check your own work” changes who owns the learning
  • What changes when the adult becomes the guide instead of the answer
About this keynote

What if education was never supposed to hand students answers? Dennis’s framework comes down to three moves: probe the question, master the answer, empower the learner. He built it across 35+ years, from a dropout-prevention classroom to Mr. D Math, and it’s the keynote behind his book TEACH: Creating Independently Responsible Learners. Parents and teachers walk out with a different job description: stop being the answer. Start being the guide.

FPEA Treasurer Larry Wang and Dennis DiNoia holding Dennis’s book TEACH

Your being here at FPEA makes this a better conference, and each year you bring more and more to the table.

“We asked you to come talk to our leaders because you have a love for leaders. Our leaders really appreciate the encouragement that you give them.”

He saw it at home, too

Larry’s daughter had tried curriculum after curriculum. “You [Dennis] looked at what she’s doing, you could see what problems she was having… let’s get her over this hump and then move her forward.” She went on to take physics as a junior in high school, and in college she tutored juniors and seniors in physics.

    Students grade their own work

  2. 2008

    A calling to teach

    “You’re a teacher. It’s time to teach.”

When the market crash ends his sales career, Dennis hears a clear answer: go back to teaching. He never looks back.

  3. 2010

    Mr. D Math begins

He starts Mr. D Math with two classes and 20 homeschool students in the back room of a Sarasota bookstore, rented at $5 an hour. Every Monday, the week’s lessons go home on DVD.

  4. 2010–2014

    Building the courses

For four years he records new lessons every week, adding a full course each year, while still teaching co-ops and tutoring on the side.

  5. 2013

    Classes go live online

Students ask for live teaching, so Mr. D Math moves to live online classes. From 2010 to 2018, enrollment doubles every year.

  6. 2026
